Hi Vicky! I have a tutorial here (http://lindabglw.blogspot.com/2009/11/using-templates-with-paint-shop-pro.html) for using templates with PSP. The pictures are fairly big, click on them if you can't see the entire picture on my blog.

I do it a bit different, no floating.

If I am trying to copy a paper into my template. I set my paper over the template layer I want. Use the magic wand (on the template layer) click the outside of that layer (the part I don't want), then go back to my paper I do want and hit delete. Then I delete the template layer

no problem. I started off with psp x I think (it was free) I did get a hold of cs3 from SIL but wowsers!!! even the simple tasks were complicated so I said who cares if its more, I can do it in psp! lol I have psp x2 now. I love my program and I haven't even learned a fraction of what it can do.

I tried both on free trial PS I only opened once lol - PSP i used every day for the 30 days and had to buy it after !! I've got x2

I'm thinking of trying PS again at some point but purely for photo edits only - as I've seen some fab actions used by others and I havent found any for PSP

I am going to jump in here and add my two pennies worth. I have been using PSP for years now and to be quite honest with you, it is such an easy programme to use. I primarily use PSP9, but have photo X2 as well and I also use PS CS2 for some of the things I can't reproduce in PSP.

If you are looking for actions for PSP, you need to be looking for "Scripts" and you also need to be careful what you buy because some of them are not very good. There are lots of wonderful designers out there who create quite complex scripts that enable you to make elements and/or alter your photo in many ways. There are also some free scripts out there - of course you might like to try writing your own especially if there is something you do frequently. If you do, have a look at my blog (http://scrappintutz.blogspot.com) and there are quite a few scrapping tutorials there, plus some links to other designers whose scripts and script tutorials are excellent.

For using templates with PSP, there really could not be anything easier. Always (Shift+D) to duplicate your template and just replace the various layers with your own papers and elements. If there is something like a shaped paper or mat that you wish to use from the template, then paste the paper you wish to use in a new layer below the shape, select the layer that the shaped section is on, then (Ctrl+A) to select the whole layer, (Ctrl+F) to float the shaped section you wish to use, (Ctrl+Shift+F) to defloat the shaped section you wish to use. Then invert your selection and click on the paper that you wish to use and delete and deselect. Then either delete the layer that had the original shape on or hide it by clicking on the Eye at the side of the layer in the layers palette.

A little something to remember is Always Save your work. PSP always has been and is still unstable in that the programme frequently becomes unresponsive and requires that it be shut down. There is nothing more heartbreaking than being 3/4 through a layout and having to redo it all.

If you need any advice or info on PSP, please let me know. I will gladly help
